Pioneering Engagement at ICCA’s Virtual Conference
Making VR environments more interactive
ICCA
TL;DR
The International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) is known for its innovative approach to incorporating cutting-edge technology into their events. Embracing the unknown, including the Metaverse, they hosted a virtual conference in the 3D space. Understanding the need for engaging speakers, activities, and interaction, Ksenija Polla, Regional Director of ICCA North America, turned to Piccles to capture participants' feelings about the future of the events industry.
The Challenge
Creating a sense of engagement and interaction in a virtual conference is challenging, especially in a 3D space. ICCA needed a way to bridge the gap between onsite and online participants, ensuring everyone felt connected and involved.
The Piccles Activation
On the main stage, Ksenija introduced Piccles to gather participants' thoughts and feelings. The activation started with a simple question about the future of the events industry, inviting everyone to draw their responses. This interactive exercise set the stage for a deeper discussion between Chris Bent, Co-founder of Piccles, and event MC Darren Isenberg.
Engaging Activities
Participants were also asked, "What gives you joy?" This question elicited a wide range of creative responses, further engaging the audience and fostering a sense of community. To wrap up the experience, feedback was collected through another Piccles activity, ensuring that every participant felt heard and valued.
The Impact
Ksenija shared her excitement about the event's success: “We just completed the ICCA Canada Summit held in a hybrid format in Montreal, Canada and online. Our biggest challenge over the past years has been to engage our audiences online or finding a way to create an interactive form of engagement for onsite and online participants. But we have to say that Piccles has managed to fill that gap. Chris is an inspiration to have come up with a concept where you can use a simple readily available technology – our mobile phones – and connect two audiences through a fun and engaging exercise. In a world of disconnect and two-dimensional relationships via our computer screens, it was heartwarming to see how each delegate suddenly felt part of and contributed to a bigger picture and message of warmth, love, hope and positivity. Everyone left our event invigorated and inspired thanks to Piccles.”
Conclusion
ICCA’s innovative use of Piccles at their virtual conference successfully bridged the gap between onsite and online participants, creating an interactive and engaging experience. This highlights how Piccles can transform virtual events, fostering connection and engagement even in the most challenging environments. By leveraging simple, readily available technology, ICCA demonstrated the power of creativity and innovation in the events industry.
